We all have listened, read and even watched movies on traditional fairy tales that revolves around damsel in distress and a prince who comes in life to save her. There have been more stronger characters in movies even if they are lesser in number and it’s time to celebrate feminine but strong characters in books for little ones as well.
New Age Fairy Tales by teen author Ariana Gupta, published by The Write Place, is on those traditional feminine characters, featured in fairy tales. However unlike the traditional roles, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty do not really depend on princes to save them. In fact they believe in writing their own destiny.
The book also comes with a puzzle and both the puzzle and the pages are of premium quality.
The message of the book rides on believing in feminism and taking a stand for who you are.
While at Mums and Stories, we did like the twisted approach to the tales, we did feel it left abrupt in connecting some parts of the stories. However even though Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast characters fall in love, they don’t get married and are their own super heroes independently.
This is a new twist to traditional fairy tales that were written years ago and the characters are strong Indian women.
The book has six stories and can be an interesting version for kids aged 7 to 12 years.
It’s time to make young girls read such books and even boys to accept more number of women as equals.
Mums and Stories gives it 4 out of 5.
